The Exeter students, who were attending his CPR class watched Mr Knowles begin to lose consciousness as he instructed his students how to resuscitate. Several of the group thought Mr Knowles was giving a practical demo as he lay on the floor feeling faint and unwell.

His class managed to save him after he told them what to do just before he passed out.

The retired nurse left hospital after several weeks and has since made "excellent progress" at his home in Newtown, Exeter, according to the BBC.
