Who IS NOT BREATHING GIVE 5 URGENT RESCUE BREATHS
- GIVE 5 RESCUE BREATHS
- Make sure that the airway remains open, by keeping the infant’s head tilted back and the chin lifted.
- Take a breath. Place your lips around the infant’s mouth and nose. Blow steadily until the chest rises. Take your mouth away and watch the chest fall. DO NOT OVER BREATHE.
- Give 5 effective breaths using the same technique.
- If these ‘rescue breathes’ show signs of breathing again then place into the recovery position on their side.
- IF THIS DOES NOT WORK
- Look, listen, and feel for signs of circulation, such as breathing, coughing, or movement.
- If circulation is absent, perform chest compressions for 1 minute, then DIAL 999 FOR AN AMBULANCE.
- POSITION FINGERS FOR CHEST COMPRESSIONS
- Place your index and middle fingertips on centre of the babies chest, in between the nipples. Gently support the head and make sure the airway is open when you commence further rescue breathes.
- GIVE 30 HARD AND FAST CHEST COMPRESSIONS AND 2 MORE RESCUE BREATHS
- Press down vertically on the chest, depressing it by one-third of its depth. Do this 30 times, at a rate of 120 compressions a minute. Do not be scared to hurt them, this is essential now.
- Give 2 rescue breathes. Alternate 30 chest compressions with 2 rescue breath.
- Continue CPR until emergency help takes over; the infant makes a movement or takes a breath.
