Surrey First Aid believes that mental First Aid and physical First Aid should be treated with the same level of importance. We know the importance in the workplace of knowing how to recognise a heart attack, how to give CPR and how to stop a bleed, but yet we do not give the same focus on how to recognise an anxiety attack, how to give First Aid for a manic episode or how to help when someone is having suicidal thoughts. This is our opportunity to change this.
With this in mind, we have created two new courses to support those in the workplace who deal with people with mental health issues: Mental Health First Aider and Mental Health First Aider for Early Years and Schools.
Mental Health First Aider (6 hours)
Mental Health First Aider is for anyone aged 16 years upwards in workplaces and community groups who wants and needs to recognise the signs and symptoms of common mental health issues and successfully help a person get the right support.
It covers content such as recognising a mental health problem, what signposting is available, and how to approach common mental health conditions like depression, anxiety, and substance abuse.

Mental Health First Aider for Early Years and Schools (6 hours)
This course has been designed with Early Years and Schools settings in mind for those who work with children to provide an understanding of the role of the Mental Health First Aider and to identify those who require mental health support in accordance with the HSE guidelines.
This course is tailored to an educational environment and deals with recognising signs and symptoms of mental health issues in adults and children, how to approach mental health conversations with SEND children, and putting in place an action plan for mental health emergencies.
